OpenFlow in Europe: Linking Infrastructure and Applications


Aim of the OFELIA project is to provide a unique network infrastructure for developers and researchers to experiment with. Therefor OFELIA uses OpenFlow, which is an upcoming network technology for network visualization through standardized and secured interfaces. OpenFlow allows developers to control the network itself as part of the experiment. OFELIA will provide high performance networking equipment for experiments under real network conditions.

The project is focused on a concept of distributed OpenFlow networks, which operate at the beginning as independent islands. The set of the seven islands will offer developers an experimental multilayer testbed on different network topologies. The federation of the islands is offering developers the opportunity to experiment with virtual topologies consisting of thousands of nodes.

Our challenges are the installation, service and enhancements of the local island as well as the scientific analysis of the collected data and experience.
