New Collaborative Research Center FONDA with two open positions at DOS
Today, many important questions in the natural sciences involve the analysis of large volumes of scientific data using data analysis workflows (DAWs) and cluster infrastructures. Scientists often have access to multiple clusters and the set of available cluster resources also typically changes over time, requiring scientists to adjust and fine-tune their DAW jobs over and over again to achieve efficient and reliable job executions. The development, testing, and operation work required for this is unfortunately still rather extensive. This is why the Collaborative Research Center Foundations of Workflows for Large-Scale Scientific Data Analysis (FONDA), recently accepted for funding by the DFG , aims to improve the productivity of scientists by investigating techniques, procedures, and tools that will improve portability, adaptivity, and reliability of DAW jobs. Towards these goals, we are going to develop new methods for profiling, performance modeling, and task placement in FONDA that will enable resource management systems to use the available cluster resources efficiently and, therefore, allow scientists to focus on the domain-specific challenges in their work.
